I am an artist by heart. Design andhandcrafting of jewelry, sculptural forms, and murals has intrigued me for almost half a decade now. Creation of wearable and visual art forms from solid sheets of metal using a saw, hammer, torch, and enamels captivates me! This journey of art and design began in India where I learned metal-smithing and basics of jewelry from Sir J.J. School of arts, which I further enhanced at the London Metropolitan University in UK, and now being in the Bay Area for 2 years I find myself being attracted to the world of web and graphics. I am interested in being a user experience designer after finishing from Academy of Art.
It is a web application that runs on a user’s ‘smart phone’ and can be synced with the user’s ‘smart watch’, ‘computer’ and optionally a ‘throat microphone’.
It has three main purposes:
Creates a curated virtual timeline from experiences logged by the user (audio/video/pictures) throughout their adventurous expedition along with additional data (as described in #2)
Provides the user with vital statistics on the surroundings (weather patterns, geographical information, route, etc.) and the user’s workout (calories, heart rate, speed, distance, etc.)
Automatically contacts emergency services
Target Audience
Primary: Adventure enthusiasts embarking on an expedition and wanting to log/share their experience Secondary: Fitness enthusiasts embarking on an expedition and conscious about logging their physical workout
Problems and Solutions
Problem: The user finds it difficult to capture experiences during an expedition and relive them in the future. Solution: ExpeTRAC logs the user’s experiences and other vital statistics during the expedition and enables the user to relive the experience by storing the information in the form of a curated virtual timeline
Problem: Most adventurous activities require the use of both hands and make it difficult for the user to use a hand-held device Solution: ExpeTRAC gives the user all the information needed through a smart watch, using voice commands, providing a convenient hands-free experience.
Problem: There is no easy and automatic way of connecting with emergency services in case of an accident or injury Solution: ExpeTRAC automatically detects abnormal situations like no activity from the user for an extended period of time, or a considerable drop in heart rate and notifies emergency services if the user does not respond to a couple of warnings.
Problem: It is easy to drift away from your fellow group members during group expeditions. Solution: ExpeTRAC enables easy communication with all or a particular group member and the optional throat microphone provides a hands-free and noise-free communication mechanism.
We do not remember days; we remember moments.~Cesare Pavese, The Burning Brand. I love traveling and believe that our lives are made up of precious moments that we cherish forever. This led me to develop a habit of maintaining a journal for my trips. I was awed by the concepts of ‘Wearable Technology’ and the ‘Internet of Things’ and decided to pursue an MFA in New Media and Web Design. The recent announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch is noteworthy and the trend is clearly toward wearable technology. ExpeTRAC, my MFA thesis project, allows me create a unique product and user experience by applying my love for journaling to a mobile and wearable medium. I aspire to work as a user experience designer. This project will take me through the various phases of the product development from conceptualization to implementation allowing me to enhance my user-experience and design skills along the way.
